Waterbury pest control

We Connecticut's top experts in rodent control. We are not a typical Waterbury rat removal or pest control company. We don't treat rats or mice like insects, because they are not - they are mammals! You can't just use poison to get rid of them, like you can with insects. Unlike most Waterbury pest control, we focus on complete and permanent solutions. We don't just use poison every month. We solve your rodent problem forever, by following these steps:

  • Inspect the entire house, ground to roof, and the attic
  • Seal shut all entry areas, no matter how small, with steel
  • Set a dozen or more rat or mouse traps in the house and attic
  • Remove all rodents as they are caught and monitor for activity
  • Once there is no more activity and no more caught, we're done
  • When necessary, we clean rodent droppings, replace insulation, and repair chewed electric wires

Waterbury Rodent Removal Tip:

How far and high can a rat jump?
Rats are good all-rounders, capable of climbing, swimming, and digging to a level far beyond the average rodent. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that rats are incredibly skilled jumpers too. Though they prefer long jumps to high jumps, they regularly leap between locations in their eternal hunt for food and shelter. While it's easy to admire their tenacity, it does present a range of challenges for homeowners.

How far can rats jump?
On average, rats can leap horizontally around 4 feet. That has important implications for trap placement. In fact, rats aren't particularly stupid – they're relatively bright – meaning they can leap over traps to avoid getting caught.

Their jumping abilities are primarily hampered by their rather poor eyesight. Unlike some animals, rats don't take unnecessary risks. Therefore, leaping further they can see, is a leap of faith. Instead, they prefer to see where they're heading. Otherwise, they can't see how far to jump or how to land.

To gain a better vantage point, you might spot a rat perched on its hind legs. They will then bob their head up and down to gauge the distance. Once they've worked it out, they will run and jump, using their powerful back legs to propel them through the air. Their front legs then soften their landing.

How high can rats jump?
Interestingly, rats can almost jump as high as they can far, around 3 feet. This enables them to jump between levels to get over a fence, to make their way towards a roof. They are also fantastic climbers, which combined with their jumping abilities makes them formidable pests, capable of breaking into almost any home. However, they'll only venture high enough if they suspect an opportunity or to escape from predators. The primary motivation is often food.

rodent trapping Rats have a low threshold for hunger and will take every opportunity to find food. If they smell it nearby, then climbing, jumping, and swimming are all put into action.

How far can they fall?
What goes up, must come down. Though rats are incredibly skilled at jumping and climbing, they're not infallible. They make mistakes. That can mean a substantial tumble, possibly even from the top of a house. Incredibly, rats can survive such falls, dropping 40 feet without any injuries. So, if you spot a rat falling from a great height, chances are it survived.

Conclusion
Let's recap.

If you think your home defenses are impenetrable to rats, think again. Not only are rats capable climbers, swimmers, and diggers, they even jump to incredible heights. On average, rats can leap 4 feet in length. That's about the size of your average table. However, they are hampered by their poor eyesight, needing a good line of sight to their destination before they risk jumping off. They can also jump 3 feet into the air. Though typically most rats will leap significantly less high. Even so, if they can grab on with the claws, their climbing abilities kick in, and they'll quickly scamper up.

Perhaps most amazingly of all, rats can survive a fall from 40 feet in the air. So, even that won't kill them.

All in all, rats present a formidable foe for any homeowner. From the basement to the attic, no place is safe. That's why it is vital to seal up any holes to the outside and not leave any food lying around.
